Change your Career through Word-of-Mouth Advertising
If you ask most people, they heard about their current position from someone else that either heard about the job position from someone else or saw the position posted online. Word of mouth is becoming one of the most effective means of recruiting for companies in any industry which will help you in your career change.
Update That Resume
Make sure your resume is up-to-date incase you are asked to provide your resume when an opportunity represents itself.
Same Industry vs New Industry
Decide if you want to switch to a different industry for a new career path or just change the position you are in now but stay in the same industry. If you are going to switch to a new industry, research first on the internet to know what you are really looking for to be able to talk about your career path to others.
Visit Niche Websites
Visit “niche websites” instead of big job boards to help cut search time in half due to looking at a specific site that caters to your industry or industries that you want to work in. Plus niche sites can also help you learn more about companies that have won awards which will help you decide if they are a good place to work. For example www.BestCompaniesAZ.com, you will find companies that have been voted by their employee as a “Best Place to Work” in the metro Phoenix area and also many other Arizona based companies that have won state and national awards.
Enlist the Help of Friends and Family
Ask your immediate friends and family members to keep their eyes and ears open for any job position(s) that are in your field of expertise or in the industry that you are trying to get yourself into. Let them know you are looking for a new job, do not be ashamed of wanting to better yourself and your life with a new job or career. Also let them know what you are looking for in a job position so they can talk about you and your skills if they are asked about you.
Ask Newly Hired Friends
Ask anyone that you know who just accepted a new job if there are any other positions open at their company (if that is the industry you want to go into), you never know how many employees a company might be looking for.
Network, Network, Network
Attend networking events in the area both geographically speaking and industry speaking that you want to work in. This will help cut down on wasted time networking with others that may not be able to help you advance on your path to changing your career.
Join Associations
Join professional trade associations. Find the appropriate association(s) in your industry or desired industry and join the association to network with their members. You will be able to learn about the companies that are in that specific industry and which companies may be better then the rest. This will also help you to determine which company you may or may not want to work for and if their reputation is good or bad.
Hire a Recruiting Firm
Work with a recruiting firm (specific to your desired industry) that gets paid when you get hired. This way you know they are working hard to fine you a job/career with you best interest in hand.
